Abstract
1322536 Sequestering aqueous systems JOH A BENCKISER GmbH 6 July 1970 [24 July 1969] 32625/70 Addition to 1234320 Heading C1C [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A method for preventing or inhibiting scale deposition from aqueous systems containing water hardening agents comprises incorporating in the aqueous system, in a sub-stiochiometric amount in relation to the hardening agent, a mixture comprising (a) an aminoalkylenephosphonic acid and (b) a graft copolymer of a polysaccharide and acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid or a mixture of either with a further copolymerizable unsaturated monomer, the weight ratio of a : b being 1 : 1-1 : 50, preferably 1 : 4-1 : 20. The composition may be incorporated into the aqueous systems in amounts up to 500 mg/litre water, preferably 10-30 mg/litre water. Aminoalkylene phosphonic acids specified are amino-tris (methylenephosphonic acid), diethylenetriamine penta- (methylenephosphonic acid), propylenediaminetetra (methylenephosphonic acid), ethylenediaminetetra (methylenephosphonic acid), 1,2- cyclohexane-diamine tetra (methylenephosphonic acid and 1-aminomethylcyclopentylamine- (2)-tetra(methylenephosphonic acid). Preferred polysaccharides are starches such as potato starch, maize starch, modified starches obtained by treating starch with an acid or an oxidizing agent at a temperature below the gelatinization temperature of the starch, cold-soluble starch derivatives which are obtained by the treatment of an aqueous suspension of starch with an oxidizing agent at a temperature up to 100‹ C., or dextrins which may be prepared by treating starch with an acid and subsequently heating the reaction mixture to a temperature above 150‹ C. The further copolymerizable monomer may be crotonic acid, maleic acid, maleic anhydride, vinylsuphonic acid, vinylphosphonic acid, vinyl acetate, ethylvinyl ether, acrylamide, ethyl acrylate or methacrylonitrile. The mixture of aminoalkylenephosphonic acid and graft polymer may be added to aqueous rinsing solutions containing acid alkyl monophosphate or gluconic acid or to an aqueous cleaning solution containing sodium silicate, sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, sodium sulphate, trisodium phosphate and a nonylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate.
