Abstract
1320857 Magnetometers SIEMENS AG 7 May 1971 [22 May 1970] 13836/71 Heading G1N A magnetometer comprises a magnet 1 and a pair of magneto-resistors 6, 7 arranged on the neutral axis of the magnet 1 in respective flux paths defined by members 2, 3 and 4 arranged as shown to leave an air-gap at one end only of the magnet. The magnet may be a permanent magnet of ceramic oxide or other high reluctance material or may be an electromagnet. The flux path members are of low reluctance material and divert part of the field F being measured serially through members 2, 6, 4, 7 and 3. As shown the ends of members 2 and 3 adjacent the air-gap are bevelled. Flux collecting plates 13, 16 are provided. The apparatus is mounted for rotation about three perpendicular axes 5, 16 and 17. The magneto-resistors 6, 7 are connected in a bridge circuit, Fig. 2 (not shown) including an adjustable resistor (9). In a modification, Fig.4 (not shown) for sensing closely spaced magnetic areas of opposite polarity without the field of the magnet 1 interfering with the fields being sensed, the air-gap is narrower and parallel-sided and the magnet is notched in the region of the air-gap.
