Abstract

1320342 Superconducting electrical machines INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [18 Feb 1970] 7886/70 Heading H2A In a superconducting electrical machine, e.g. synchronous generator, comprising a hollow rotor having a central part 10 carrying a superconducting winding 11, e.g. of Cg-Ti cooled by circulating cryogenic fluid, e.g. liquid helium through winding cooling ducts 13 which central part 10 is joined to rotor shafts 10a supported in bearings 12 by two end parts 10b the wall of one or both of which is cooled by circulating cryogenic fluid through wall cooling ducts 15, the fluid is supplied from a supply means through respective generally radial passages 14, 16 and heat from the radially outer end of the winding passage 14 is conveyed by a heat transfer means 20 to the supply means, to be dissipated in the fluid fed to the wall passage 16. As shown, the heat transfer means 20 is a solid Al or Cu member which conducts heat to a common junction 17 connected to refrigeration equipment 18 connected by a conduit 19 to a further such equipment outside the rotor, and thus the temperature increase due to increase of pressure resulting from centrifugal force of the fluid in passage 14 is dissipated in the much larger quantity of fluid fed through passage 16. The equipment 18 may be connected by a pipe 19 to further such equipment outside the rotor or, alternatively, the equipment may be wholly outside the rotor.
