Abstract
1320222 Modifying iron surfaces ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 10 Aug 1970 38451/70 Heading C7U Iron having a surface area exceeding 5 sq. metres per gram, e.g. finely divided particles formed by the reduction of fluidized iron ore, is passivated by contacting with steam or a free oxygen containing gas having an oxygen content of 2 to 18À5 mole per cent oxygen. The temperature of the iron at the start of the process is 1050 to 1600‹F. and is 1200 to 1450‹F. for less than a minute when the steam is used and 800 to 1000‹F. for 1 sec. to 5 mins., when the gas is used. The iron is then cooled to less than 400‹F. in less than 45 minutes.
