Abstract
1316394 Boring earth &c INSTITUT FRANCAISE DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS 16 Aug 1971 [17 Aug 1970] 38399/71 Addition to 1110548 Heading E1F In a sub-aqueous core sampling apparatus comprising a frame A, B, C, D, 4, 5, 6, 7 adapted to rest on the sea-bed 3, a motor and bit assembly 9, 8 guided on the frame and suspended from a flexible hose 10, a reel 12 for hauling, paying-out, and storing the hose, and a pump-set 17, 18 for supplying water through the hose and motor to the bit, the reel is driven by hydraulic means 26 controlled from the surface. The motor 9 may be a turbine driven by the water, or an electrical motor. The reel may be driven through a reduction gearing by a single hydraulic motor, a brake being provided. In a modification the reel may be driven by a pair of hydraulic rams one of which is extended whilst the other is retracted. In a further modification the reel is driven by two hydraulic motors connected by a clutch, the arrangement being that the motors may work together to haul the assembly or one motor may retard the lowering of the assembly. Two pumps in parallel (Fig. 5, not shown) driving the hydraulic motors are driven by a single electrical or hydraulic motor, or the hydraulic motors may be driven by hydraulic fluid pumped from the surface (Fig. 6, not shown). (For Figure see next column)
