Abstract

1,233,909. Storage winches. INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. 7 June, 1968 [8 June, 1967], No. 27295/68. Heading B8B. A storing winch for handling a fluid supply cable formed by successive sections connected end to end comprises two hydraulically-driven drums 11, 13 either of which may be coupled to a central idler and storage drum 12 for rotation therewith, one driving drum winding on a section of cable while the other driving drum is paying out a previously wound section. The fixed axle 1 of all these drums is bored to supply fluid from a line 6 through stop valves 4, 5, swivel couplings 19, 20, and connections 23, 24 to any cable sections wound on the drums, the axle bore being divided by a wall 25. In drilling operations, when the connected sections of cable are to be fed down a well by a traction device (28), Fig. 2A (not shown), drums 11 and 12 are coupled by latches 14a and a cable section is wound thereon and is coupled to the connector 23 and valve 4 is opened. The traction device unwinds the cable while the motor of the drum 11 acts as a brake and when the cable is free of the drum 12, the latter is coupled to the drum 13 and a further cable section is wound thereon. When the original cable is fully wound off the drum 11 it is coupled to the new section on the drums 12, 13, the valves 4, 5, drum motors, and traction device being operated appropriately. The traction device comprises one or several endless chains provided with shoes which grip the cable, which may be an electric power cable.
