Abstract
1315884 Stabilization of 1,1,1-trichloroethane SOLVAY & CIE 2 Sept 1971 [28 Sept 1970] 40984/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] 1,1,1-Trichloroethane is stabilized against decomposition by metals by the addition of 2- methyl-3-buten-2-ol and one or more additional stabilizers which are aliphatic alcohols, cyclic ethers, diaryl ethers, nitriles, nitroalkanes or ketones. 1 to 6% of total stabilizer is used. The alcohols are C 1 -C 7 alcohols which may be saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted; preferred are tert-butyl alcohol and tert-amyl alcohol. The nitriles are C 2 -C 7 nitriles which may be aromatic or aliphatic, saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, e.g. acetonitrile and benzonitrile. The nitroalkanes contain 1 to 4 C atoms, e.g. nitromethane. The diaryl ether is preferably diphenyl oxide. The cyclic ethers may be mono- or poly-cyclic ethers optionally containing other heteroatoms besides O, comprising one or more rings each having 5 or 6 carbon atoms, which may be saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted; preferred are 1,4-dioxane and 1,3,5-trioxane. The ketones contain 3 to 7 carbon atoms and may be substituted or unsubstituted, e.g. methylethyl ketone. The 1,1,1- trichloroethane may be mixed with other chlorinated solvents.
