Abstract

131,434. Hooton, W. Aug. 17, 1918. Exhaust-silencers.-Two or more silencers of the kind described in Specification 117,868 are arranged in series, the pipes c<1>, d<1> in the second silencer being half the length of the pipes c, d of the first, and so on. The pipes c, d differ in length by one or an odd number of half wavelengths of the pulses in the exhaust gases, in order to produce interference, and the pipes c<1>, d<1> differ in length by half that amount and silence overtones which are not silenced bv the first pair of pipes. The pipes c, f, e<1>, f<1> are slidable on the pipes c, d, &c. for adjustment. and the longer of the two pipes of each silencer may be coiled as at i, Fig. 2. The silencer may be provided with the means described in Specification 117,868 for dividing the exhaust into two streams of equal intensity. In a modification, the effect of a difference in length between two pipes is obtained by cooling one of them by means of air and water.
