Abstract

1313783 Granulating perborate KALICHEMIE AG 20 July 1970 [19 July 1969] 35112/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] Microcrystalline sodium perborate material, containing 15 to 25% water, is formed into granules by screw extrusion through a rotary die comprising a surface provided with a plurality of extrusion orifices, each having a cutting surface 10 projecting upstream towards the screw and which acts to gouge the material being delivered to the orifice. In the particular example, sodium perborate tetrahydrate of 19À6% moisture content is granulated under a stated range of extrusion conditions, and dried in a fluidized bed to yield granules of 10À4% oxygen content. In the Fig. 1 embodiment, the rotary die 4 comprises a cylinder 4 rotating across the outlet of an extruder barrel, the screw impeller 3 whereof is supplied with the perborate at a hopper 1 provided with a tapering feed screw 2 comprising a helically extending band permitting transverse movement of the material. The speeds of rotation of the die 4 and screws 2, 3, are adjustable. In the Figs. 5 and 6 embodiments (not printed) the extruder barrel is vertical, with the rotary die being located at the lower end thereof and comprising either an upwardly or downwardly directed cone. A preferred alignment and size of the orifices is stated.
