In a roller-and-ring or roller-and-plate machine for extruding animal foodstuffs through dies and then breaking the extruded material into cubes or pellets the die apertures are of a special shape, each die aperture comprising, Fig. 3 (which illustrates a roller-and-ring machine, the roller being d and the ring c) a cylindrical non- tapered preforming chamber k and a cylindrical extrusion section m. The chamber k is larger in cross-sectional area than the section m, and the peripheral length of its wall is 15-33 per cent greater than the peripheral length of the wall of section m. The axial length of the section m is 1À5-6 times its diameter. As shown, a tapered part o joins chamber k and section m, and the portion of the die aperture following section m is opened out to form a delivery section n having a cross-sectional area not greater than that of chamber k. Fig. 6 shows the invention applied to a roller-and-plate machine, the rollers d (which may be four in number) revolving freely on stationary arms and the die plate c is a flat annulus revolving about a vertical axis. As shown, the die apertures are inclined forwardly. In modifications (a) the die apertures of Fig. 3 may be inclined forwardly, as in Fig. 6 ; (b) in the Fig. 6 machine the die-apertures may extend normally, as in Fig. 3 ; (c) the annulus c of Fig. 6 may be stationary, the rollers d being driven in a circular path over its surface. Fig. 7 shows details of the Fig. 3 machine, which comprises two rollers d, e (which may have fluted peripheral surfaces) adjustably journalled on stationary eccentric spindles r within a rotating housing which carries the die ring c.
