1313495 Band strainers P P PAYNE Ltd 23 July 1970 [24 July 1969] 37368/69 Heading F2G A tool for tensioning banding material around a package includes a pivoted anchorage member for clamping the free end of the banding material to the tool base, a tensioning device comprising two grippers both pivoted about the pivotal axis of the anchorage member, and a device for retaining tension in the banding material between successive tensioning strokes of the tensioning device. As shown a jaw 37, 43, formed with a wedging channel 45, is pivoted about a shaft 31 and urged anti-clockwise by a spring 79 so that its lower surface 44 acts in conjunction with surface 27 of the base to anchor the end of the band. A roller 46 in the channel 45 holds the tension in the band between successive tensioning strokes of a lever 73. Lever 73 is fast with a block 29, which is formed with a shoe 74, so that on movement in direction 86 shoe 74 co-operates with an increased radius portion of a surface 76 on a sector 35 to wedgingly engage the band. On further movement in direction 86, shoe 74 and sector 35 pivot in unison to tension the band. Downward movement of lever 73 from its rest position is transmitted through abutting surfaces of sector 35 and jaw 37, 43 to free the anchored end of the band. In a modification, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), shoe 74 is replaced by a cylindrical projection extending from block 29, instead of spring 79 a compression spring acts downwardly on jaw 37, and a spring-loaded pad carried by sector 35 bears against shaft 31 to retard sector 35 relative to block 29.
