Abstract

1311365 Sonic drying of webs DOMINION ENG WORKS Ltd 15 Oct 1970 [7 Nov 1969] 49108/70 Heading F4G A paper web 25 is supported by a moving or fixed curved surface and is subjected (in a manner similar to that described in Specification 1,311,363) to sound waves generated by generators 23 (only one shown) and reflected by reflectors 21. The curved surface is formed by a heated roller 20 (which may be perforated and under internal suction), but may be formed by felts or netting. Each reflector 21 is an elongated part-elliptical (or parabolic) trough extending the full width of the web and supporting spaced generators 23 which comprise air whistles (operating at frequencies of 14À5 or 16 kiloherz). A flexible blade 27 sweeps saturated air from the web surface, and causes air to exhaust at 28. The blade 27 may be replaced by an air slot fed with secondary air from a duct which also supplies secondary air directly into the reflector 21 through apertures therein. Each reflector may be mounted (Fig. 4, not shown) by anti-vibration gaskets (G) and adjustment screws (C1) and (C2) to a sound-insulating hood (43), and the air slot (47) is adjustable. In Fig. 7, the hood is formed in two halves 72, 72 separable for rethreading a broken web. Reflectors (not shown) are spaced around the hood and the exhaust air passes out through ports 75 each incorporating sound absorbing filters and an adjustable damper. Each edge seal 8 comprises partitions 83 tipped with silicone rubber and having adjustable relief valves therebetween. The seals 8 may be replaced by air jets. The drum 70 is sealed at its ends to the hood 72, 72 by air jets or by spring-urged liner. Heating means may be employed between reflectors. The web temperature may be raised as described in Specification 1,130,278.
