Abstract
1311093 Treating molten metals MATERIALS & METHODS Ltd 13 March 1970 [13 March 1969] 13289/69 Heading C7D A reactive additive is introduced into molten metal by placing the former in a reaction chamber through which the latter flows, the chamber having an inlet and outlet and being so designed that sufficient metal is always present to cover the additive; initially metal may be prevented from leaving the chamber until an adequate depth has accumulated. The metal may be iron and the additive a spheroidizing agent, possibly used in an amount of 0À15-0À5% of the iron. The chamber may be an integral part of a cupola launder, may be set in the spout of a melting vessel, or may be formed in an independent treatment device located between melting and receiving units; it may have a cover and a supply of protective non- oxidizing gas. As illustrated, metal from a pouring outlet enters inlet 1 and flows through passage 2 to chamber 4 having cover 5 before leaving through outlet 6 and spout 7.
