Abstract
1309726 Rotary-piston I.C. engines; purifying exhaust gas DAIMLER-BENZ AG 19 April 1971 [11 March 1970] 23562/71 Headings F1B and F1F In a two-unit rotary brochoidal piston I. C. engine, the inlet 8' and outlet 12 are located in the peripheral wall of the casing, and the outlets 12 of the units have exhaust pipes 4, 5, Fig.2 which terminate together at an exhaust manifold 6, the alternate discharge of exhaust gases through each pipe 4, 5 producing a suction effect in the other pipe thus drawing some air or fuel/air from the inlet 8' of the associated unit past the piston 10 into the exhaust chamber 11 and thus into the exhaust manifold 6 to induce aftercombustion of the exhaust gases to purify the exhaust emissions. Further air may be drawn into the manifold 6 via openings at the junction of the pipes 4, 5, and further air or fuel/air mixture may be drawn into the outlet 12 via a passage 13 connecting with the inlet 8' upstream of a throttle flap 14. Reverse flow in passage 13 is prevented by a throttle or non-return valve 15. The exhaust pipes 4, 5 may be insulated by e.g. asbestos or double-walling.
