As described, ASCII-coded data is supplied serial-by-bit from storage (e.g. magnetic tape or disc) associated with a processor, via (or not via) a buffer store, to a shift register for conversion to parallel form, this being converted to Hollerith code by a read-only-memory code converter. The Hollerith-coded data is gated in an output-control unit to energize relays via transistors, the relay contacts supplying power to punch solenoids. Each item of data supplied to the code converter may be a series of two parallel groups of bits, each group being converted separately in turn, the code-converter output from the first group being stored in flip-flops in the output-control unit until the output from the second group arrives when they are supplied in parallel to the transistors. Change-over switches associated with the relays permit a punched card to be read, with the data being supplied via the same relays to the output-control unit where it is temporarily stored in cross-coupled NORs and compared with the output of the code converter fed by the shift register which is now connected to operate as a self-cycling counter. On equality, the counting is stopped and the count shifted out serially to the storage associated with the processor.
