Abstract
1,257,163. Selective signalling. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 14 Feb., 1969 [16 Feb., 1968], No. 7839/68. Heading G4H. In a system for registering the movements and location of documents or other articles, each article is provided with coded identity data which is transmitted to a remote central register, e.g. a computer, together with further coded data representing the station from which it is being issued and the destination station. Each station may comprise a documentreceiving drawer with the station identity code recorded on a transparent cover-plate, a set of thumb-wheels for entering the destination station identity, and a photodiode matrix for sensing the three coded data items. The stations are scanned in turn and transmit the coded data serially by bit as a frequency shift signal. The central register may return a different frequency check signal when the data transmitted to it has been checked, e.g. for parity errors. Certain stations are document originating stations and in addition have equipment for recording data on documents and for producing a punched tape containing data relating to document identification, classification and history which may be read and stored magnetically in the computer.
