Abstract

1307055 Percutaneous lead TECNA CORP 22 Sept 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 44167/71 Heading A5R A percutaneous lead 10 comprises an antibacterial fluid reservoir 14 for controllably releasing the fluid outwardly over a prolonged period of time when the lead is inserted beneath the skin. The reservoir 14 is formed around the periphery of the lead and consists of a wick like absorbent material such as a porous cloth which may be of a knitted polyester or a fibrous mat which may be of polytetrafluoroethylene felt, containing an antibacterial fluid such as silver nitrate, silver sulfadiazine, or mapheride acetate. A diffusion controlling layer 16 has through passages 17 supplemented by microcavities 18 to promote the outward release of the fluid. There may be 100 perforations/cm<SP>2</SP> of 0.1 mm length and 0.05 mm width. The outer wall 10a of the lead also contains microcavities 13 which, in use, allow the skin and tissue to grow around the outside wall and become permanently fixed thereto to prevent the passage of bacteria along the lead into -the skin.
