Abstract

130,626. Heap, W., and Newbery, E. Jan. 29, 1918. Aluminium, magnesium, cerium, and rare-earth chlorides are obtained in anhydrous form by heating an oxide, hydrate, hydrated chloride, or weak acid salt, such as carbonate or oxalate, with phosgene gas or with a mixture of carbon monoxide and chlorine. When using a mixture of carbon monoxide and chlorine, a catalyst such as animal charcoal may be employed to convert part of the mixture into phosgene. According to the Provisional Specification, the invention is applicable to the production of calcium, iron, and other chlorides.
