Abstract
In the production of anhydrous magnesium chloride, or of saline mixtures containing the same by subjecting to the action of chlorine, or gases furnishing chlorine at high temperatures, briquettes consisting of magnesium oxide with or without other corresponding metal oxides, such as calcium oxide, and carbon, prepared with the acid of magnesium chloride liquor as binding agent, this magnesium chloride solution is obtained by reacting the hydrochloric acid present in the waste gases of the chlorination after absorption in water with magnesium oxide or carbonate, for example, crude or calcined magnesite. Preferably, the gases, after removal of dust, are passed through a tower packed with Raschig rings down which milk of magnesia is pumped. If dust is not first removed from the gases, the magnesium chloride solution is subsequently filtered.
