Abstract

1305525 Polarized contact devices STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 22 March 1971 7466/71 Heading H1N A sealed magnetic reed contact device is polarized to give break-before-make contact action by a permanent magnet mounted within the envelope 1 and formed by a magnetized length 3 of nickel-iron alloy having a positive co-efficient of magnetostriction and a coefficient of thermal expansion matched to that of the envelope and the length 3 of nickeliron alloy is held under tension to give it a squarer hysteresis loop than the other magnetic members 2, 4. The member 3 may be heated by current passing through it whilst its ends are sealed in the envelope 1 so that on cooling it is held under tension. Magnetic poles are produced at points 5, 6, 7, 8 by two coils (not shown) so that the changeover reed 2 is attracted to the member 3 unless an opposing flux is applied to the device. The member 3 may be replaced by a strip with a length of non-ferromagnetic copper between its ends and magnetized at one end only.
