1303208 Feeding sheets BURROUGHS CORP 6 Oct 1971 [19 Oct 1970] 46405/71 Heading B8R In a document transporting apparatus, shown in plan in Fig. 1, in which an overlapping stream of documents is fed along a guideway 18, 14 into which a document feed means, e.g. a rubber coated wheel 80, protrudes for feeding separate sheets, a separator member 20 is provided for frictionally engaging the stream and allowing only single sheets to pass, the force with which the member is urged against the stream and the feed means being varied in response to the speed of the feed means, this speed being dependent upon the frictional force between the feed means, documents and separator member, such that a constant frictional force is applied to the documents under all conditions. Documents 10 on edge in a hopper 12 may be urged by a screw arrangement 42 to feed rollers 44 which feed an overlapping stream towards the wheel 80. A lever 62 actuating a switch 64 controls the screw 42, whilst a stripper wheel 74 prevents too many documents leaving the hopper at one time. A flexible, ridged, foam urethane belt 96, rotating in the opposite direction to, and slower than, the wheel 80, is urged against the stream as it passes the wheel 80 such that all the documents overlying the foremost document of the stream are held back by the frictional force applied thereto by the belt. This force also retards the speed of the wheel 80 to some extent, a slotted disc (88), Fig. 2 (not shown), and light sensor (90), (92) detecting this speed change and actuating a motor 116 which relieves the pressure of the belt on the documents and wheel thereby reducing the frictional force until an equilibrium is attained. Thus a constant frictional force is applied to documents by the belt irrespective of the changes in coefficient of friction of the documents, belt &c. The belt may be replaced by a wheel.
