Abstract

1303103 Reflective materials MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 20 Jan 1970 [21 Jan 1969] 2774/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A flexible, reflecting structure comprises a monolayer of glass beads 14 of mean diameter 25-250 microns and a refractive index of at least 1À8 embedded hemispherically in a transparent binder 16 which contains specularly reflective nacrious pigment platelets 19 which have a maximum dimension of 8À25 microns and which are arranged in cup like fashion about the embedded portion of the beads. The structure may be made by embedding the beads 14 in a thermoplastic coating 12 on a carrier sheet 11 and then applying the binder 16 over the exposed part of the beads. An adhesive coat 18, which may be pigmented, is then applied and this can be supplemented by additional adhesive 20. The structure may then be laminated to a fabric 22 by heat and pressure and the carrier sheet 11 and its coating 12 may be stripped off to expose the beads. In an embodiment, the structure is provided with a removable liner 26 to enable it to be stored prior to lamination with the backing. The binder 16 may be an acrylic alkyd, epoxy or polyurethane resin but a preferred binder is a mixture of a thermoplastic polyurethane mixed with a vinyl chloride vinyl acetate copolymer and containing a minor amount of epoxy resin. Pigments e.g. TiO 2 or dyes may also be added. A suitable fabric is a twill cotton/polyester fabric.
