Abstract

1302413 Coating plastics globules R ERNST 12 Jan 1970 [14 Jan 1969] 1474/70 Headings B2E and B2L [Also in Division C1] Coated globules of plastics material, e.g. polyurethane are made by spraying mixed constituents of the plastics material to form globules and coating the thus formed globules with a powder during the period within which they are attaining their maximum size by reaction of the constituent. The powder may be Portland cement, sand or quartz. Fertilizers may be incorporated in one of the constituents of the plastics globules. The coatings may be fused. In the embodiment, reactants for the formation of polyurethane are fed from tanks 1,2 and reacted in a mixing head 7 and sprayed through a nozzle 10 into a container 11 having a perforated floor 12. The powder 13 is fluidised by passing air; preferably heated to 20-35‹C, upwards through the floor 12 by means of a fan 14. The powder 13 may be replenished from a vibrating screen 21 and the coated granules which float to the surface are collected via outlet 22. The perforated floor 12 may be tilted or a transverse flow of air may be blown across the fluidised bed to assist the removal of the coated granules. A nozzle plate or nozzle battery may be used in place of the perforated floor 12. The process may also be carried out using a cloud of flue dust in place of a fluidised bed. Binding slabs are made of concrete incorporating the coated granules of polyurethane.
