Abstract

1298732 Laminates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 June 1971 [20 July 1970] 35035/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Glass or plastics sheets are laminated by placing therebetween a layer of an ethylene copolymer having a melt flow index not greater than 20 and containing by weight (1) 50 to 93% ethylene, (2) 2 to 40% methacrylic acid and (3) 5 to 48% of a mixture of vinyl esters of C 2-6 alkanoic acids and C 1-12 alkyl acrylates and/or methacrylates, the mixture containing at least 3% of vinyl esters, and heating above the melting point of the copolymer at a pressure and for a time sufficient to effect bonding of the sheets. Preferred esters are vinyl acetate, and methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. The copolymers may be used in the form of preformed sheets which may be provided with parallel ridges to prevent blocking, or may be extruded or cast from solution or melt on one or more of the sheets to be booded. The laminates are preferably cooled rapidly, e.g. with water or cold air blasts. The material to be bonded may be a silicate glass, optionally pretreated with a silane adhesion promoter, or a rigid transparent or translucent plastics material, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl chloride or polycarbonate resin. Preferred esters are vinyl acetate, and methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate; and examples describe the preparation of glass laminates using copolymers of ethylene, vinyl acetate and methyl methacrylate or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.
