Abstract
1315489 Laminates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 Aug 1970 [5 Sept 1969] 44105/69 Heading B5N A laminate, e.g. for use as safety glass, com prises two sheets of glass or transparent or translucent, substantially rigid sheets of plastics material, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene or polycarbonate, with a partially transparent sheet of plastics film, e.g. biaxially oriented, heat set polyethylene terephthalate or oriented polyamide film, sandwiched between them and bonded thereto by a substantially transparent copolymer of ethylene having a melting point below that of the film. The surface of the film may be provided with colour or decoration by printing or the film may have a dye or particulate material incorporated therein or may be lightly metallized on at least one surface while remaining transparent in parts. The film may be given improved bonding properties by subjecting it to high voltage electric stress accompanied by corona discharge and the glass surfaces may be treated with an adhesion promoter, e.g. a silane. The ethylene copolymer may be a copolymer of ethylene with one or more hydroxy or epoxy aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monoesters of acrylic or methacrylic acid in which the aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical consists only of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and contains not more than six carbon atoms, and with 0-55% by weight of the copolymer of a further comonomer having one ethylenic double bond which is an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid or a vinyl ester, the copolymer containing, by weight, at least 35% of ethylene units and (a) 2-8À5% of free hydroxy groups, (b) 0À3-3% of epoxy oxygen or (c) an equivalently effective amount with respect to the percentages in (a) and (b) of both free hydroxy groups and epoxy oxygen. Alternatively a copolymer of ethylene and acrylic acid with a vinyl ester, an acrylate or a methacrylate or a copolymer of ethylene and methacrylic acid with an acrylate or methacrylate, may be used. The ethylene copolymer may be coated on to both surfaces of the plastics film from solution or as a melt or sandwiched as a film between the plastics film and glass or rigid plastics sheets and heated to a temperature above the melting point of the ethylene copolymer but below that of the film, e.g. in an evacuated bag of plastics or rubber in an oven or autoclave. The laminate may be cooled rapidly or cooled slowly, reheated to about 120‹ C. and rapidly cooled. Cooling may be effected by plunging the laminate into water at about 40‹ C. or by blasts of cold air.
