Abstract

1298724 Polymerization processes DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 17 March 1970 [18 March 1969] 12725/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division B2] A plastics powder for coating articles (see Division B2) comprises a copolymer of 50-80% by weight methylmethacrylate, 50-20% by weight of one or more elasticizing esters of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and optionally 0À5-5% by weight of another copolymerizable monomer containing free hydroxyl and/or amino and/or acid and/or acid amide and/or acid anhydride groups, the copolymer having been obtained by bulk polymerization followed by size-reduction, or by polymerization in aqueous suspension. Examples of suitable elasticizing comonomers are given. The other copolymerizable monomer may be hydroxypropylmethacrylate, 2 - hydroxyethylmethacrylate, 2 - aminoethylmethacrylate, 2- hydroxyethylacrylate, 2 - aminoethylacrylate, 3 - hydroxypropylacrylate, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, itaconic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, their amides and diamides, maleic acid anhydride and maleic acid imide. Plasticizers, brighteners, U.V. absorbers, levelling agents, matting agents or pigments may be added either before or after polymerization. In an example, 350 g. monomeric methylmethacrylate, 100 g. butylacrylate, 5 g. maleic acid anhydride, 7 g. hydroxypropylmethacrylate, 2 g. glycol dimercapto acetate, and 0À4 g. lauroyl peroxide are mixed together and polymerized to form a syrup. After rapid cooling the syrup is mixed with 125 grams titanium white and 1À5 g. lauroyl peroxide, the mass poured into a mould and hardened in an oven. Other examples are conducted with changes in the monomers and pigment used and, in one case, the monomers are polymerized in an aqueous paste containing BaCl 2 , Na 2 SO 4 and NaCl.
