Abstract
1451948 Coating compositions PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 11 Oct 1973 [11 Oct 1972] 47435/73 Headings C3P and C3R Non-aqueous polymeric coating compositions comprise a solution of at least one polymer containing at least 4% by weight of units of a hydroxyl-containing ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and at least 0À5% by weight, based on polymer solids, of microgel particles comprising cross-linked polymeric particles having a particle size of from 1-40 microns and being substantially insoluble in tetrahydrofuran. The hydroxyl-containing component of the first polymer is preferably a hydroxyalkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid; other usable hydroxy monomers include hydroxyalkyl esters of maleic or fumaric acid, and allyl or methallyl alcohol. Comonomer components which may be present in the hydroxyl-containing polymer include unsaturated carboxylic acids and their derivatives (esters, amides, nitriles) and styrene and its derivatives. The hydroxyl-containing polymer is suitably prepared by dispersion polymerization in an organic liquid in the presence of a polymeric dispersion stabilizer, whereby, in addition to the production of the main polymer product, microgel particles are formed by crosslinking interpolymerization of the dispersion stabilizer and at least one of the monomers used. A solvent for the hydroxyl-containing polymer is then added to the dispersion to form a solution. Alternatively, the microgel particles may be prepared separately and added to a solution of the hydroxyl-containing polymer. The polymer solution is preferably mixed with an aminoplast resin cross-linking agent, e.g. a (butylated) melamine-formaldehyde resin. In one embodiment,the hydroxyl-containing polymer also containing carboxylic acid units is modified by reaction with an imine; coating compositions containing such a product are resistant to solvent popping. The compositions of the invention, which may be pigmented (e.g. with metallic pigments) and may also contain other additives, can be used for coating paper, metal, wood, paperboard or plastic substrates; a particular application is the coating of automobile bodies.
