Abstract
1297746 Injection apparatus W X HALLORAN 4 May 1971 [4 May 1970] 12889/71 Heading A5R An injection apparatus comprises a metallic needle 31, with a pointed end 51, having a retractable protective plastics sleeve 41 telescoped over its forward end, a pusher wire 43 connected to the sleeve 41 and also to an annular plunger 45 at the rear of the needle, a coupling cap (35) Figure 1 (not shown) lying behind the plunger for connecting the device to a syringe or other container with the pusher wire 43 being contained in a longitudinal bore (57) Figure 7 (not shown) which terminates at the forward end as an abutment stop 59 to prevent the protective sleeve 41 being pushed to far forward. The pusher wire 43 has a series of transverse cross bars (61) Figure 10 (not shown) at its forward extremity which are embedded in the protective sleeve 41 to form a secure coupling. In use, the protective sleeve 41 is retracted, a vein pierced using the needle point 51 and the protective sleeve pushed forward over the needle using the annular plunger 45. The coupling cap 35 may be replaced by a manifold assembly (67) Figure 2 (not shown) which has three rearwardly projecting bosses (73) (75) and (79) for connecting the device to syringes or other containers. The needle may be extended by having a flexible conduit (71), of either flexible plastics material or of flexible metal, between the needle 31 and coupling cap (35) or manifold (67). The needle may have a forward end (133) Figure 13 (not shown) with an outerwall diameter which is less than that of the rearward end and a tapered protective sleeve (139) is telescoped on the forward end (133). The protective sleeve (139) has an inwardly projecting tab (143) which runs in a groove in the forward end of the needle and this prevents excessive movement of the sleeve (139). The needle may be oval in cross-section.
