Abstract

1297623 Valves E KENT 2 Dec 1969 [4 Dec 1968] 57484/68 Heading F2V A butterfly valve has a part-spherical enlargement in the bore 22 to form a seat for a closure member 26 which is in the form of a sphere the opposite portions of which have been removed to leave a disc. The disc has a cylindrical portion having part-spherical ends 34, 36 and through which a manually-operated spindle 38 extends. The actuating handle 48 may belocked in position by a wedge 50 movable between a surface 52 on the handle and a flange 54 of the valve housing. Seals may extend around the periphery of the disc and the partspherical ends 34, 36 and these seals may merge into each other. The disc may be in a plane inclined to that containing the spindle so that a spherical surface extends around the periphery in a single plane and may have its edges chamfered. The bore 22 may be formed by two plastics or metal inserts 18, 20 secured to the housing 10 and the line of intersection between the inserts may be inclined to the transverse plane containing the spindle at the same angle as the disc. If the inserts are metal a seal projecting into the seat may be held in a groove between the mating faces.
