Abstract
1297265 Anodizing aluminium CEGEDUR GP 5 Dec 1969 [6 Dec 1968] 59487/69 Heading C7B Aluminium or aluminium alloy is provided with a protective coloured coating by forming a porous layer of alumina by anodizing; depositing a metal or a metal compound in the pores of the alumina layer by electrolysis using A.C. current, thereby producing a dark colouring, anodically dissolving the coloured particles until the required colour is obtained and sealing the alumina layer with boiling water. The colouring may be produced by salts of copper (pink, red, copper shades), nickel, cadmium or cobalt (bronze or gold shades.) Prior to such treatment the surface may be subjected to mechanical, chemical or electrolytic polishing or etching. The boiling water used for the sealing step may contain nickel acetate. Aluminium alloy treated may include Mg; Mg and Si or Mg, Mn and Si. Electrolytes which may be used for the colouring step include copper sulphate; and nickel or cobalt sulphate with boric acid and ammonium sulphate. The counter electrode may be of the metal of the compound to be deposited or of stainless steel.
