Abstract
1296971 Anti-theft devices LOWE & FLETCHER Ltd 26 Aug 1969 [10 July 1968 20 Nov 1968] 32790/68 and 42121/69 Divided out of 1296972 Heading B7J [Also in Division E2] A locking device for a steering column comprises a lock body 10 accommodating a sliding latch bolt 17 with a tip 18 projectable into a cavity 11, a key actuated cylinder lock operating the bolt and three safety means retaining the bolt in withdrawn position. A lock barrel 27 is connected to a spindle 35 traversing the bolt, the end of the spindle having an element with a stepped cam surface which engages a cam follower portion 47 on the bolt whereby rotation of the spindle progressively withdraws the bolt, and switching operations are effected for accessories, for ignition and for a starter switch by a projection 49 which engages in a socket in a switch unit fitting in a chamber 13. With the key rotated to the "accessories" position the stepped cam element partially withdraws the bolt. Further rotation of the key to the "ignition on" position withdraws the bolt completely and removes a finger on a washer 42 slidable on the spindle from the path of a tooth 45 on an element 21 slidable in a recess in the bolt causing a spring to move the element to engage over a spline projecting from an inner surface of a side wall of the lock body thus holding the bolt withdrawn. The washer 42 is moved by a spring 43 beneath the tooth 45 on the element 21 and also holds the bolt withdrawn until the lock barrel has been moved bodily, which is possible when the key is rotated to "accessories" position in which position on obstructing peg 32 on the barrel aligns with an aperture in the lock housing. The bolt is also held withdrawn by an end surface of the cam follower exerting a wedging action on the stepped cam element on the spindle when the key is turned to the starting position and then released thus preventing reverse movement of the cam follower until reverse rotation of the key releases the wedging effect. In a modification the washer 42 is rotatable with the barrel, has the finger to restore the element 21 to the inactive position and is spring urged to engage in an opening in the bolt which is retained withdrawn until the barrel is moved bodily.
