Abstract
1296860 Basic refractories GR-STEIN REFRACTORIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [17 Feb 1970] 61383/69 Heading C1J A direct-bonded basic refractory comprises a solid alkaline earth metal zirconate, preferably calcium zirconate, coexisting with any solid basic refractory phase persisting at a temperature at which there will exist a liquid phase while maintaining a high degree of solid/solid contact with the basic refractory phase in the presence of the liquid phase, to form a skeleton of zirconate-bonded refractory at that temperature. Calcium and zirconium can be introduced to the basic refractory in the form of lime or dolomite and zircon respectively. When the basic refractory is magnesia the refractory has an initial composition in wt. per cent MgO 60-85, CaO 7-14, ZrO 2 6-18, SiO 2 <6 forming a periclase direct bonded with 3-19 wt per cent calcium zirconate in the presence of 15 wt. per cent liquid phase at 1700‹ C. When the basic refractory is dolomite the initial composition is in wt. per cent CaO.MgO 98, Fe 2 O 3 <1, alumina <0À5, SiO 2 <0À5, zircon 2-5. The basic refractories are mixed with the zirconium containing compounds, calcined, pelletized, crushed, then fused and cast into refractory bricks. The refractories may be tar impregnated.
