Abstract

1296680 Coiling and winding FURUKAWA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 4 Nov 1969 [4 Nov 1968 (2) 6 Oct 1969 (3) 13 Oct 1969] 53926/69 Headings B3E and B3W [Also in Division D1] A continuous wire winding apparatus wherein wire is to be wound alternately on to two spools comprises a wire catching end plate fixed coaxially to a flange at the end of each spool or to the rotatable driving shaft on which the spool is attached, the end plate being provided on its circumferential surface with one or more wire catching members adapted to hook around and hold the wire, and a barrel upon which the finishing end portion of the wire is wound after being caught by a wire catching member, the barrel having a relatively stationary cover to prevent the end portion of the wire from jumping out. In one embodiment (see Figs. 1, 2 and 4) the wire 1 is passed through a traverse 2 and wound on to a spool 8 until the prescribed quantity of wire has been wound. At this moment the apparatus 3 carrying the traverser 2 is moved to the position shown in solid line and on the signal to stop, a catching guide 10 is moved rearwardly and, after a certain time a catching guide 10<SP>1</SP> is moved rearwardly. The wire 1 cannot be gripped by a wire catcher 7<SP>1</SP> on spool 81 because of the time lag between the two catching guides and a stopper 11. Therefore the wire is first gripped in a wire catcher 7 on spool 8 after which the wire is passed through a space 'd' and wound on to a barrel 17 until the catching guide 10<SP>1</SP> moves the wire to the wire catchers 7<SP>1</SP> whereupon it is cut by means 13<SP>1</SP>. The cut end of the wire passes through an aperture in the cover 14 of the barrel. When the wire begins to wind on the reel 8<SP>1</SP> the apparatus 3 is moved back to its central position so that when the required amount of wire is wound on the spool 8<SP>1</SP> the apparatus 3 can be moved to the loft as seen in Fig. 2 and the wire catching operation repeated. In another embodiment (see Figs. 18 and 20) a traverser 802 is shifted between limit switches LS 1 and LS 2 according to the normal and reverse rotation of a motor 814 under the normal winding condition. When the predetermined amount of wire has been wound on spool 807 the traverser is moved from the position 802<SP>1</SP> to the position 802, and is also quickly moved to the limit switch LS 3 . At the same time a catching guide 810 is moved rearwardly so as to engage the wire 801 with a wire catcher 818<SP>1</SP>. The traverser stops at the switch LS 3 to allow a required amount of wire to be wound on the barrel 813 after which the traverser is moved to the switch LS 2 and normal winding conditions are again resumed. In order to cut the wire the cutting means are provided adjacent the side of each spool whereby a wire caught in a wire catching member may be cut. The cutting means may be a single blade onto which the wire may be carried or a pair of circular knives driven in counter rotation and set adjacent to the end plate. Cutting means can also be situated on the circumferential surface of each end plate adjacent to each of the wire catching members on the side opposite the spool flange.
