Abstract

1296516 Wagon doors H N K PATON 19 Feb 1970 [2 May 1969] 8023/70 Heading B7L [Also in Division E2] A boxcar 1 comprises a body having a, side opening, an upper rigid closure section 5 and a lower rigid closure section 6, which sections extend the full length of the opening and may be moved substantially out of registry with the opening by means of closure-hoisting lines 17, 17<SP>1</SP> attached to projections 18 of the lower edge portion of each end of the section 6, the line 17 passing over an idler pulley 19 mounted on an upper thrust plate 20 rigidly attached to the boxcar 1 which plate 20 limits lengthwise movement of the section 5. The line 17 extends downwards from the pulley 19 to a second pulley 21 and thence to a hoisting line drum 22, the drum 22 being driven by an endless chain 23 extending around sprockets 24, 25 mounted upon the drum shaft and on an actuator drive spindle 26 respectively. Lower thrust plates 27 limit lengthwise movement of the section 6 and have inwardly inclined edge portions 27<SP>1</SP> to engage a rod 18<SP>1</SP> projecting lengthwise of the car 1 from the lower edge portion of the section 6 so that it is wedged outwardly of the section 5 as the section 6 is hoisted. In order to shift the upper edge portion of the section 6 outwardly of the section 5, a cam follower roller 28 is mounted on an end edge of the upper portion of the section 6 and is engaged between flanges of a channel cam track 29 mounted on an end portion of the section 5. Swinging guide arms 33 which have their lengths extending transversely of the boxcar 1 have one of their ends hinged at 34 to boxcar roof 35. The other (swinging) end of each arm 33 is hinged to the upper portion of the section 5 at 36. A counterweight 17<SP>11</SP> can be attached to the line 17 between the pulleys 19 and 21 to reduce the load to be applied to the spindle 26 for hoisting the sections 5 and 6. In a further embodiment described with reference to Fig. 8, the line 17 is replaced by a screw actuator. A screw 37 is disposed with its length upright and with its upper end mounted in a bearing on the car frame and a travelling nut 39 is moved along the screw 37 by rotation of an actuator drive spindle 40 turning angle gearing 41. An arm 42 projects transversely of the screw 37 from the nut 39 and has in it a slot 43 extending lengthwise of the arm in which the projection 18 of the lower portion of the section 6 is engaged. In a still further embodiment described with reference to Fig. 9, the projection 18 is connected to an endless chain 44<SP>1</SP> which extends around sprockets 45, 47. A ratchet pawl 50 co-operates with a gear mounted on the same shaft as the lower drive sprocket 47 so as to hold the sections 5 and 6 in any elevated position. In a fourth embodiment described with reference to Fig. 10 (not shown), the sections 5 and 6 are hoisted by means of jacks.
