Abstract
1296454 Hydrocarbon fuel PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 5 June 1970 [6 June 1969 15 April 1970] 27290/70 Heading C5G [Also in Division C3] Hydrocarbon fuels, e.g. gasoline, jet fuels, diesel fuels, heating and stove oils, and high boiling distillate fuels, contain as pour-point depressants, e.g. in amount 0À005-0À5 wt. per cent based on the fuel, hydrogenated butadienestyrene copolymers having a number average M.W. in the range 1000-200,000 and a total olefinic unsaturation in the range 0À5-12 wt. per cent as determined by infra-red absorption spectrascopy (or 3-15 wt. per cent as determined by iodine monochloride titration), the hydrogenated copolymers being derived from a starting material having a weight ratio of butadiene: styrene units in the range 98 : 2 to 50:50 and a vinyl unsaturation content in the range 42-8 wt. per cent, said vinyl content being inversely related to the amount of styrene. The depressants are usually added in solutione, e.g. in cyclohexane or low viscosity lubricating oil.
