Abstract

1294071 Mattresses &c W P NAIL 1 Jan 1970 [9 Jan 1969] 112/70 Heading A4M A mattress comprises an outer chamber 10 defined between upper and lower walls 2, 3 of substantially inextensible, air imperveous material and a plurality of spaced compartments 11 within the outer chamber, each compartment 11 comprising substantially inextensible, air imperveous material sealed around its entire upper and lower peripheries to the walls 2, 3 and defining an internal chamber 17, and includes inflation valves 9, 18 in the respective chambers 10, 17, each internal chamber 17 being subjected to the same external pressure of the outer chamber 10. As shown each compartment 11 is in the form of a tubular beam and includes top and bottom walls 13, 14. In a modification, Fig.3 (not shown), the top and bottom walls are formed by the walls 2, 3 of the outer chamber. In another embodiment, Fig.4 (not shown) the compartments (40) are in the form of tubular columns which may intercommunicate through conduits (46) Fig.7 (not shown). The mattress may include both column and beam form compartments.
