Abstract

1293821 Electro-physical measurements ELCOMETER INSTRUMENTS Ltd 19 April 1971 [25 March 1970] 14497/70 Heading G1N A magnetic flux density probe includes a permanent magnet 10 and a ferromagnetic tip 12 defining an air-gap in which is mounted a magnetoresistor MR1 and a thermistor Th1. The probe is connected via leads a, b, c, into a bridge circuit, Fig. 2 with the magneto resistor forming one arm and the temperature compensating thermistor forming part of another arm. To measure the thickness of a film of non- ferromagnetic material the bridge is balanced with the tip 12 first resting on a ferromagnetic plate. The film is then placed between the plate and tip 12 and the reading of galvanometer 14 calibrated in thickness of film noted, the amount of bridge imbalance being proportional to the film thickness which varies the flux density in the probe gap. In order to measure the thickness of a nickel film applied to a non-ferromagnetic substrate or the ferrite content of stainless steel, variable resistor VR2 is adjusted to balance the bridge with the probe in free air and then the probe is applied to the material or object being tested. Since the flux in the air-gap is also dependent upon the magnetic permeability of the object the bridge unbalance gives the measurement of the thickness or content.
