Abstract

1293117 Two-part couplings KEARNEYNATIONAL Inc 19 April 1971 [2 Feb 1970 5 Oct 1970] 26919/71 Heading H2E A coupling comprises a first part 1 including a male contact 9 housed in a female insulating body 7 and a second part 2 including a male insulating body 11 which has a female contact 29 and a pair of arc-pinching segments 25 which are mounted for movement radially and biased inwardly of the insulating body 11. The removable first part 1 is connected to a high voltage cable 3 and comprises an elbowshaped resilient rubber body 7 with a rigid sheath 6 surrounding the plug contact 9 having a tip 10 which may be of tungsten. The coupling part 2, which serves as a transformer terminal, comprises a resilient rubber body 11 complementary to the body 7 and an assembly consisting of a capsule 12 formed of two halflines 13 in which the contact 29 and three pairs of arc-pinching clappers 25 are mounted. The contact 29 comprises a sleeve with eight tungsten tipped fingers 34 which are biased radially inwards by a garter spring 35, while each clapper 25 comprises a moulded segment of arc-quenching material, e.g. melamine, with a plug-contact-guide entry 30 and a respective spring 24 so that the clappers of each pair bear against each other in the absence of the plug-contact 9 between them and against the contact 9 when it is present. The halflines are adhesively sealed together and wrapped in a jacket 33, of, for example, plastics and fibre glass, and a rubber integument 36. Each clapper may have a second guide entry (130). As an alternative to tipping the fingers 34 with tungsten a dish-shaped article (Fig. 8, not shown) is positioned around and in contact with the contact 29, so that any arcs are struck between the plug-contact 9 and the edge of a hole (39) in the article through which the contact 9 passes.
