Abstract

1292107 Drilling equipment INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS 13 May 1970 [14 May 1969] 23210/70 Heading E1F [Also in Division B8] Pipe racking apparatus, e.g. on a drilling ship comprises a carriage movable along tracks to convey pipe sections between a horizontal storage position and a vertical operating position. The track has three sections 6, 7, 8 engaged respectively by rollers 15, 17, 16 on the carriage. The pipe is carried by a transfer device 46 to a location below the carriage, and is then lifted by jacks 47, 48 to a position where it can be held by gripping jaws 18 on the carriage and by a suspension link 19 or an auxiliary carriage 14 which is slidable along the main carriage. The carriage is raised by cable 11 until it engages a latching mechanism at 52. The auxiliary carriage 14 is then lowered on the cable 11, and the pipe section passes through the opening 57. The suspension link 19 is restrained against movement transverse to the axis of the pipe section by a guide with flared ends (Fig. 7, not shown) fixed to the carriage 13, and the gripping jaws 18 which allow sliding movement of the pipe is opened by a cam on the auxiliary carriage as the latter is lowered.
