Abstract

1291253 Pipe couplings PLESSEY CO Ltd 12 Jan 1970 [23 Jan 1969] 3912/69 Heading F2G A flexible pipe joint, employing a convoluted bellows 3, has a braid sheath 4 attached to each end of the joint and drawn over a radially floating ring 5, of greater diameter than the bellows, approximately mid-way along the bellows. The braid 4, comprising woven helical metal strands, is held at its end points between tapered collars 14 and tapered surfaces of the end-pieces 11, 12 as described in Specification 1,091,013. The floating ring 5 has a U-shaped section, filtering over a guide plate 16 held in the bellows 3, and moves radially when the end-pieces 11, 12 are relatively inclined, decreasing tension in the outer side of the braid 4 and taking up slack in the inner side of the braid. Diametric vanes (17), (18), Fig. 4 (not shown), for transmitting axial thrust, may be fixed to respective end-pieces and are mutually at right angles, and mutually engaged by central tapered recesses allowing relative angular movement.
