1291149 Isolating vitamin B 12 MOSLOVSKY TEKHNOLOGICHESKY INSTITUT PISCHEVOI PROMYSHLINNOSTI 23 Oct 1970 50372/70 Heading C2V In a method of isolating vitamin B 12 from a fermentation broth, the broth or a cell mass of microorganisms separated therefrom are hydrolysed or extracted to obtain the vitamin B 12 in a soluble state; the hydrolysate or extract is contacted with acidified alumina and with alkaline alumina to remove coloured contaminants; the solution is then reacted with a cyanide to obtain the cyan form of the vitamin and extracted with an organic solvent immiscible with water; the vitamin B 12 is extracted from the organic solvent solution with water and other cobalamins are separated from the vitamin by chromatographic separation over alumina of a solution of the vitamin in an aqueous solution of acetone or an alcohol; vitamin B 12 being crystallized from the eluate obtained from the chromatographic separation. The starting material may be obtained in a thermophilic methane fermentation or a propionic acid fermentation. Examples are given.
