Abstract

1290435 Electro-photographic copiers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 17 March 1970 [10 April 1969] 12650/70 Heading G2H A document carriage (13), Fig. 1 (not shown) and a photo-conductive drum (10) are driven by a main drive system which is stopped if a malfunction is detected; an auxiliary drive system returning the carriage to its home position. A latching mechanism for the cover of the carriage is also described. The main drive system is described in Specification 1249045 and includes a motor (not shown) which drives the drum (10) and a disc 72. During copying, disc 72 engages pawls 82, 92 on a carriage-drive-gear 78. When a malfunction is indicated by paper feed detector switches (51-54) the main drive motor and fusing lamp are de-energised and an auxiliary motor (130), Fig. 2 (not shown) is energised to disengage disc 72 from carriage drive gear 78 and to couple a disc 88 to gear 78 to return the carriage. The cover latching mechanism Figs. 6-9 (not shown) is rendered inoperative when the carriage is returned by the auxiliary motor, to prevent the cover from being reclosed until a plunger is manually depressed when the machine has been repaired. Plunger depression also operates a device which clears any copy paper from the feed path.
