Abstract

1288401 Coated sheet material AJINOMOTO CO Inc 30 Sept 1969 [30 Sept 1968 27 Dec 1968] 47965/69 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Leather substitutes are produced by coating flexible substrates with a block copolymer consisting of residues of an optically active gamma-methyl glutamate isomer and a linear polymer of molecular weight 1,000-50,000 which is not a polyaminoacid and which has at least one terminal primary or secondary amino, epoxy, isocyanate or hydroxyl group. In Example 3 the coating polymer comprises residues of gamma-methyl glutamate and of a polyurethane derived from polyethylene glycol and hexamethylene diisocyanate. The substrate is polyurethane leather. In Example 5 unwoven polyethylene terephthalate fabric is impregnated with a composition comprising 1,2-dichloroethane carbon black and a copolymer comprising residues of gamma-methyl glutamate and of an epoxy resin prepared from epichlorohydrin and polyethylene glycol. The impregnated fabric is then coated with the same polymer, coagulated in a bath containing water and dimethylformamide, washed with water and recoated with a copolymer of gamma-methyl glutamate and a polyethylene glycol. In both Examples the product is embossed.
