1286699 Alkylene oxide-phosphate ester adducts; solubilized compositions MARLESKUHLMANN-WYANDOTTE SA 21 Nov 1969 [29 Nov 1968] 57151/69 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions C4-C5] Water-insoluble organic solvents having at room temperature a solubility in an aqueous alkaline medium as is used in the field of heavyduty cleaning compositions of less than 1% by weight are solubilized by mixing said solvents with water or an aqueous electrolyte solution in the presence of a mono- or di-phosphate ester of a non-ionic adduct of an alkylene oxide and a C 8-18 linear aliphatic alcohol, or an alkali metal or ammonium salt of such ester. A preferred solubilized composition contains from 3 to 15 parts of ester solubilizing agent, from 1 to 50 parts of insoluble organic solvent and from 96 to 35 parts of water or aqueous electrolyte solution based on a total of 100 parts by weight. In a modification of the above process the waterinsoluble organic solvent may be premixed with a water-insoluble non-ionic surfactant, preferably one based on C 10-15 linear aliphatic alcohols and mixtures of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide in proportions ranging from 2 : 1 to 6 : 1. Electrolytes include alkali metal hydroxides, chlorides, metasilicates, tripolyphosphates and pyrophosphates. An example describes the solubilization of benzoic, oleic and adipic acids, benzaldehyde, acetophenone, cyclohexanone, ethylether, anisole, bisphenol-A, 2-ethylhexanol, lauryl alcohol, methylbenzylalcohol, carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride, ethylacetate, ortho-dichlorobenzene, benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, hexane, styrene, kerosene and mineral spirits. A further example describes a general purpose liquid cleaner based on kerosene and pine oil, solubilizing agent, water, non-ionic surfactant, monoethanolamine, isopropanol, an N-alkyl dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, tetrapotassiumpyrophosphate and an alkanolamide of a coconut oil fatty acid. Specified solubilizing agents have the formula wherein (i) M represents Na, R<SP>1</SP> is a mixture of C 12-15 alkyl groups and A<SP>1</SP> is a number of oxyethylene units representing 30 to 45% by weight of the monoester; (ii) M represents H, R<SP>1</SP> is a mixture of C 10-12 alkyl groups and A<SP>1</SP> is a mixture of oxyethylene and oxypropylene units in a ratio of 6 : 1 and representing 75 to 80% by weight of the monoester; and (iii) M represents H, R<SP>1</SP> is a mixture of C 12-15 alkyl groups and A<SP>1</SP> is a mixture of oxyethylene and oxypropylene units in a ratio of 2 : 1 and representing 45 to 50% by weight of the monoester. Uses.-The solubilized compositions are stated to be useful as upholstery cleaners, bottle washing compounds, dry cleaners, dedusters, descalers, detergents, paint and wax strippers, wall and floor cleaners and detergents.
