Abstract

1284597 Controlling motor vehicles INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO 23 Dec 1969 [23 Dec 1968] 62564/69 Heading B7H [Also in Division F1] A motor vehicle includes an internal combustion engine and a control mechanism for controlling a speed regulator of the engine, the mechanism including a lever assembly 50 connected to the regulator for controlling the speed of the engine, first control means 32 by which the lever assembly 50 is actuable to preset a first engine speed and second control means 21, by which the lever assembly is actuable to control the speed of the engine at speeds in excess of the preset first speed, the second control means including a counterweight 23 which initiates alteration of the setting of the first control means as the second control means is released from an actuated position. As shown, the lever assembly 50 includes a plate 51 pivoted at 52 and connected to the speed regulator control rod 13. A hand lever 32, mounted to the dashboard 11 through friction pads 34, is fast with a rotatable rod 31 connected to a push-rod 39 which comprises a resilient part 42 and a semi-spherical end portion 41 co-operable with an abutment on the plate 51. Rotation of the hand lever 32 in the clockwise direction (as seen from above), causes the plate 51, and hence the rod 13, to move generally clockwise of pivot 52. By this means, a first slow-running engine speed is preset. A footpedal 21 supporting a counterweight 23 is connected to a rod 24 pivoted in a plate 55, the end of rod 24 adjacent this plate carrying a member 56 which is co-operable with a portion of plate 51. By this means, depression of the foot-pedal 21 causes member 56 to act on plate 51 to pivot the same clockwise about pivot 52 whereby the engine speed is increased. Relaxation of force depressing the pedal 21 allows plate 51 to return to its position determined by the setting previously set by means of the hand lever 32. The inertia of the counterweight 23 and the shockabsorbing characteristics of the resilient part 42 prevent the setting of the hand lever being altered unintentionally as plate 51 pivots towards its normal position and contacts the end portion 41 upon release of the foot-pedal. Also provided is an over-centre mechanism 70 comprising an arcuate member pivoted to plate 51 at 71 and connected by spring 73 to a frame member 74. At positions of plate 51 corresponding to low engine speeds, the line of action of the spring force is to the right of pivot 52 so that the plate 51 is urged towards a lower-speed position; at positions of plate 51 corresponding to fast engine speeds, the line of action of the spring force is to the left of pivot 52 so that the plate 51 is urged towards a faster-speed position.
