Abstract
892,488. Controlling vehicles. ETABLISSEMENTS CARNIEL FRERES, Sept. 18, 1958 [Sept. 18, 1957; March 5, 1958], No. 29985/58. Class 79(5). In a toy vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine and which may have an automatic clutch and gear change, a pedal is provided which operates, over the first part of its travel, the accelerator and over the second part of its travel, the brake. The engine control comprises an automatic clutching arrangement so that, during the braking movement, when the throttle valve is closed, the engine is declutched. As shown in Fig. 3, a pedal 1 is pivotally mounted at 2 and is pivotally connected to arms 5 and 6, the latter being connected to the brakes through links 15 and 16 rigidly mounted upon a rotatable rod 9, and rods 17. A spring 18 restores the pedal to its initial position. The brakes are so adjusted that they do not operate over the first part of the movement of the pedal 1. A lever 8 is pivoted upon the rod 9 and bears against an abutment 7 of the arm 5. The lever 8 is adjustably connected to an arm 11 which also bears against the portion 7 of the arm 5. A rod 18 connects the lever 8 to the accelerator. Springs 12 and 13 urge the members 8 and 11 into contact with the member 7. Upon depressing the pedal 1, a position is reached whereby the lever 8 breaks contact with the member 7, and is urged by the spring 13 back to its initial position determined by contact of an extention 8<SP>3</SP> of the lever 8 with a longitudinal member 14 of the frame. The point where the lever 8 breaks away from the abutment 7 may be varied by adjusting the angle between the members 8 and 11. In a modification, Fig. 7, a pedal 24 is pivoted at 30 and has a foot-engaging portion 29. Pivoted levers 25 and 26 are connected to the accelerator and brake mechanisms respectively through rods 33 and 49. A rod 31 pivoted at 31<SP>1</SP> to the lever 24 and has an abutment 31<SP>2</SP> bearing upon the lever 25. Nuts 34, adjustable upon the threaded end of rod 31 bear against the lever 26 after a period of movement of the lever 24. The rod 33 is biased towards its initial position by a spring 48, Fig. 10, and is connected to a lever 37 pivoted at 35<SP>1</SP> to the frame 35. A bell crank lever 43 having an upper flange upon which is mounted an adjustable stop member 44 which bears against the frame 35 is also pivoted at 35<SP>1</SP>. The throttle 46 is connected to the lever 43 by a cable 45. A spring 38 carried by the lever 37 has an end portion 38<SP>1</SP>, 38<SP>2</SP> which is bent and passes through a hole in the lever 37. Movement of the rod 33 rotates the lever 37 and the end 38<SP>2</SP> of the spring 38 causes rotation of the bell crank 43 and operation of the throttle. The portion 38<SP>1</SP> of the spring slides along a wedge 39 causing the part 38<SP>2</SP> to retract from the hole until, at a given position, the lever 43 is no longer entrained and returns to its initial position. The wedge 39 is carried by a threaded member 40 which can be positionally adjusted.
