Abstract

1284178 Producing refractory metal or alloy powder by reduction REDERIAKTIEBOLAGET NORDSTJERNAN 18 May 1970 [19 May 1969 2 April 1970] 23977/70 Heading C7D Powdered W, Mo, Ta, Nb, Re, Cr or alloy thereof e.g. W-Re is produced by reduction of the gaseous halide e.g. WCl 6 with a reducing gas comprising mainly H 2 , the halide and reducing gases e.g. from supply pipes 4, 5 with or without other gases e.g. Cl 2 , HCl or N 2 from pipe 6 being mixed in at least one duct 3 and pre-heated to, e.g. 20-150‹ C. above the minimum reaction temperature (300-330‹C. for WCl 6 ) using heating elements 7, before entering the reaction chamber 1. The particle size of the powder formed is adjusted by controlling one or more of the ratio of the reactants in the gases, its velocity or temperature; and preferably also the temperature of the reaction chamber, e.g. in zones by groups of heating elements 2, the temperature increasing in the direction of gas flow. A vibrator 10 and heat exchanger 8 (for cooling) may be mounted adjacent the mixing duct 3.
