Abstract

1283352 Porous resistance heaters BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 30 July 1969 [30 April 1968] 20432/68 Heading H5H A gas heater, of the type comprising a porous electrically conductive body through which diffuses the gas to be heated, has an average pore diameter of less than 0À1 mm. The heater is constructed as a hollow cylinder plugged at one end so that the gas passes into the cylinder through the open end and diffuses through the walls of the cylinder. A larger surrounding cylinder has exit means for the heated gas. The conductive body is of silicon carbide, or is a clay/graphite or clay/metal powder formulation, or is a conductive ceramic or a ceramic containing metal powders, carbon or metal oxides, e.g. ferrites. Gas flow is preferably below 20 litres per minute at a pressure of 300-800 lbs. per square inch, the invention being useful for heating gases such as nitrogen which are difficult to heat continuously under low flow rates. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,182,421.
