Abstract

1282136 Cooling motor vehicle engines NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 17 Nov 1969 56176/69 Heading B7H [Also in Division F1] A cooling system in an automobile having a transversely-mounted engine 10, Fig. 1a, comprises a duct 12 associated with a fan 15 for withdrawing the heated cooling air from the radiator 11 and discharging it to the ambient through a conduit 14. The conduit 14 extends downwardly but in other embodiments it extends horizontally to the side of the vehicle. The conduit 14 may be provided with a branch conduit (17), Fig. 1b (not shown), for leading the heated air into the vehicle interior for heating purposes, a valve (16) for controlling flow through the branch conduit being provided in the conduit 14. The fan may be driven by the engine crank-shaft either directly or through a belt. Fixed guide vanes (23), Fig. 5a (not shown), may be arranged downstream of the fan. Some of the air entering the front of the vehicle during forward motion thereof, may pass directly into the engine compartment to cool the engine directly and thereafter pass through an opening (21), Fig. 3 (not shown), in the side of the duct (12) for subsequent discharge by the fan (15). Some of the air passing through the radiator may pass directly to the engine compartment, Fig. 4 (not shown).
