Abstract
128,013. Provay, G. A. P. June 17, 1918. Movable - abutment type; valves, distributing and cutoff; working-fluid supply.-A rotary engine or pump comprises a piston 2 and abutment ment 9, which rotate with alternating differential movements, the distribution of the fluid being controlled by ports in the casing and in an annulus carried by the piston, and by the relative movements of the parts 2, 9 effected by a Geneva mechanism. In the construction shown in Figs. I and II, the piston 2, fast on the shaft 4 (which is fitted with a fly-wheel 5) is formed with an annulus 6 closely fitting the casing 1. The casing has an admission port 20, and an axially-spaced exhaust port, to co-act with piston ports 24, 27. A port 29 on the piston co-acts with a second casing- outlet to exhaust the space between the non-working face of the piston and the abutment. The intermittent gear between the parts 2, 9 consists of a toothed sector 16 on the boss 3 of the piston 2 which is adapted to mesh with a pinion 11 on a countershaft 12, the latter being geared at 13, 14 to the hollow shaft 15 carrying the abutment 9. The enlarged tooth 18 of the pinion 11 may be fitted with anti-friction devices to bear against the plain surface 17 of the sector. Fig. XI. shows a pump modification in which the inlet 20 and outlet 21 are fitted with non-return valves 31 and are both in constant communication with a continuous port 24 in the part 2. In the pump, the functions of the parts 2, 9 may be opposite from that shown in Fig. 1. A fourstroke internal-combustion engine is shown in Fig. XIII., in which the abutment 9 receives two impulses in each revolution of the piston. In the position shown, gas is being admitted at 20 to be compressed by the abutment 9 when the (upper) sector 16 engages the pinion 11. After firing (as by a plug 32) scavenging is effected when the other sector engages the pinion.
